An African Grey Parrot may outlive you! Did you know, the African Grey Parrot can live to be longer than 30 years old! You may be thinking, that’s not old at all, for a parrot it is! Most parrots live 20 to 30 years. The African Grey Parrot can live 30+ years at the minimum! I’m going to inform you about their lifespan.
African Grey Parrots can live longer in captivity than almost all other parrots. If your parrot is well taken care of in captivity than it can live in between 50 and 70 years! African Grey Parrots that do not live exclusively in captivity, can live up to 80 years depending on nutrition. There was even a known parrot to live 90 years in their natural habitat.
The African Grey Parrot less than 6 months have dark grey or black eyes. At 1 year old, their eyes will usually turn to a lighter grey color. The African Grey matures at 3 to 5 years old. That is when their iris will turn a light yellow color. When your parrot matures, it can be hard to tell its age.
African Grey Parrots are native to Africa, meaning African Grey Parrots must be kept at room temperature or warmer. If they are kept in areas colder than 65°F, it can wear down their immune system causing them to die at a younger age.
